Former President Jerry John Rawlings came to the rescue of a physically disabled man who was struggling to pay for his daughter's diploma after hairstyling training.

Rawlings donated an undisclosed amount to Emmanuel Ofoe, a beggar from the street at the Kawukudi Crossroads in Kanda, Accra, to arrange for the graduation of his daughter.

Ofoe had slipped a note revealing his problem to the former president in the traffic jams. To his surprise, Rawlings took note of it and decided to help him.

Excited by the gesture of the former president, Ofoe revealed that he had been at the crossroads of Kawukudi for about 10 years. He expressed his gratitude by saying that the money would pay for the graduation and also to arrange a decent family welcome.

The news of Rawlings' kind gesture has been revealed on the official Facebook page of the former president.

"Former President Jerry John Rawlings delighted Emmanuel Ofoe, a beggar suffering from physical disorders, when he donated an undisclosed amount to fund his daughter's graduation to the hairdresser position.

Emmanuel, who is traveling in a custom wheelchair and carrying a numbered license plate at the Kawukudi junction in Kanda, slipped a note detailing his plight with the former president in the traffic jams earlier in the week.

The memo informed the former president of the challenge he was meeting to help his daughter, who had completed her training as a hairdresser in Ada, to graduate.

Excited after the donation to the office of the former President, Emmanuel expressed gratitude for the generosity and confirmed that the money will be used to pay the graduation fees as well as a decent reception for family and friends after ceremony.

Emmanuel said that he had been "stationed" at Kawukudi for about ten years. He became physically disabled at the age of six after becoming ill and later developed a neurological side effect that could not be treated.

Former President Rawlings has a warm relationship with hawkers at the Kawukudi junction. A peanut seller who has persistently dropped a small bag of peanuts into his car is now selling minerals and iced water from a freezer offered by the former president's office.

Another young woman who was found selling to raise money to continue her studies was sponsored to return to school ", the post read.
