Former President Jerry John Rawlings rejected the proposal to rename the University of Development Studies (UDS).
The project of renaming four universities after prominent Ghanaian personalities, including the former president, features in the controversial bill on universities that should be submitted to Parliament.
In a statement signed by Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, an officer in the communications branch of his office, Mr. Rawlings said that "when the proposal to appoint the UDS was brought to the attention of the outgoing president in 2017 by the Minister of Education, he thanked the President and the Government were honored, but they politely declined the offer because it was his principle not to badign to the monuments and to the national facilities the same name. "
