The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been postponed until 23 February, with general elections scheduled for Saturday, 16 Februaryth, 2019.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, President of INEC, held a press conference at the headquarters of the commission. He announced that it was no longer possible to continue the election announced today, February 16, 2019.

He announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections had been postponed until 23 February 2019.

He also said that the elections for governors and state bademblies were also postponed from one week to 9 March 2019.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) met on Friday, February 15, 2019 and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 general elections scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2019 and Saturday, March 2, 2019.

After careful consideration of the implementation of its logistical and operational plan and the determination to hold free, fair and credible elections, the Committee concluded that it was no longer possible to proceed. in elections as planned.

As a result, the commission decided to postpone the presidential and legislative elections to Saturday, February 23, 2019.

In addition, elections for governors, state bademblies and the Federal Capital Regional Council are being postponed until Saturday, March 9, 2019.

This will give the commission an opportunity to address the identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.

It was a difficult decision for the commission, but it was necessary for the proper conduct of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy.

The commission will meet key stakeholders to keep them abad of developments, on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2 pm, at the Abuja International Conference Center.
