SALT LAKE CITY – Major League Soccer's Friday night game between Real Salt Lake and FC Cincinnati has been, in many ways, a trend for expansion.
And the 2005 expansion team told newcomers in 2019: "Welcome to the league".
Albert Rusnak scored twice and Sam Johnson added a goal for the second straight game to bring Real Salt Lake to a 3-0 win over Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Cincinnati (2-4-2, 8 points) blocked the game for the first 40 minutes and even opened the game, beating RSL 3-0.
But visitors waited their hour.
Moments after being wounded on one finger by the medical staff, Rusnak gave the visitors an advance. The Slovak international recovered the shot saved from Corey Baird in the 42nd minute in the 42nd minute and scored a goal against Cincinnati goaltender Spencer Richey to score Real Salt Lake (3-4-1, 10 points) .
Johnson doubled the advantage a few moments later. After Richey rescued Rusnak and Damir Kreilach's attempts, Johnson cleared a bypbad ahead of goal to give the visitors a 2-0 lead on the expansion side at the break.
"At the beginning of the match, it was a bit difficult," said Johnson about the halftime lead. "But I knew I had to go.
"It was good pressure from the team … and then I just finished finishing."
Rusnak pushed the lead to 3-0 just before the hour, turning the penalty after Jefferson Savarino shot a penalty on a counterattack. The four-fingered bandit (hat tip, team leader Brian DunsethStutter-step then brought the ball back into the top 90 to give RSL a lead that he would never give up.
Baird helped score the first two goals, with a shot saved in the 42nd minute and a pbad before the badist, in the second minute of the break, before giving way to Bofo Saucedo in the 74th minute.
In many ways, it was a complete performance for Real Salt Lake – and away from Rio Tinto Stadium. Cincinnati beat the visitors 13-10 with savage shots. Salt Lake held nearly 50% of the ball possession and had a 7-1 lead on penalties.
Real Salt Lake played without goalkeeper Nick Rimando. The 39-year-old goalkeeper was injured in training earlier in the week and substitute Andrew Putna made the second start of his MLS career after being signed by the Real Monarchs last July.
Both teams played in eco kits made from recycled plastics as part of the Major League Soccer Earth Day initiative organized by adidas Parley. This is the third consecutive year of this partnership that links the climatic fabric of this sports supplier to projects composed of Parley Ocean Plastic collected on beaches and in coastal communities.
