Barcelona advanced to the Spanish Super Cup final after beating Real Sociedad on penalties in Wednesday’s semi-final.

The Catalans were playing Cordoba without the services of captain Lionel Messi, who was ruled out due to an undisclosed injury which saw him excluded from last week’s league against Granada.

Wednesday’s winners advance to the tournament final – which includes last season’s La Liga and Copa del Rey winners and finalists – with the other semi-final scheduled for Thursday against Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao in Malaga. The final will take place on Sunday at La Cartuja stadium in Seville.

Barcelona took the lead in the first half with the acrobatic header from Frenkie de Jong, after Antoine Griezmann picked his Dutch teammate for the goal.

But La Real equalized after the break when VAR confirmed the ball hit De Jong in the arm on a cross in the box, with Mikel Oyarzabal converting the successful kick.

Both teams went back and forth with several good looks during the span, but neither team managed to find the second goal before penalties decided the game.

De Jong and Griezmann both missed their attempts on penalties, but Ousmane Dembele, Miralem Pjanic and Ricard Puig managed their chances. Mikel Merino and Adnan Januzaj have converted for the Basque side.
