Rebels deny killing Italian diplomat in DR Congo

A Hutu rebel group, known as the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), denied any role in Monday’s killing IAmbassador of Italy to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Luca Attanasio, 43, died in hospital after the United Nations convoy he was traveling in was targeted near the eastern city of Goma.

An Italian military police officer traveling with the envoy and a Congolese driver were also killed.

But the group’s spokesperson denied the accusation.

“Over 100 armed groups are operating here, we don’t know why they linked us. We played no part in this heinous assassination, ”Cure Ngoma told BBC Great Lakes.

Mr. Ngoma said that “anyone identified as responsible for the attack should be severely punished”.

In a statement, the armed group said the attack took place in an area where DR Congo and Rwanda had a military presence – so any investigation should take this into account.
