More than 56,000 kilos of stuffed sandwiches are recalled for fear of plastic contamination.

US-based North Carolina-based J & J Snack Foods launched the recall after two customers found "semi-transparent plastic," the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said Friday.

Health officials said no one had reported any side effects after eating the sandwiches.

The products have been shipped to stores across the country, but it is unclear which states are affected by the recall.

The USDA's Food Safety and Food Inspection Service (FSIS) said J & J Snack Foods had received the complaints on April 3.

The nine-ounce carton packs contain two sandwiches, each consisting of Bremer Clbadic pepperoni pepper pizza-filled sandwiches or Bremer Clbadic ham and cheese-filled sandwiches.

They were produced and packaged on February 19 and 20 of this year, and then shipped to grocery stores across the country, including Aldi.

The affected sandwiches have an expiry date of August 12, 2020 and August 13, 2020.

Packages have the EST establishment number. 27231 inside the USDA inspection mark.

We still do not know how the plastic went into the stuffed sandwiches and the type of plastic found.

FSIS has categorized the recall as Clbad I, which means "a health risk situation in which there is a reasonable likelihood that the use of the product will result in serious health consequences or even death".

Customers are urged not to consume the products and discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

This is the latest in a series of recalls of food products due to contamination by plastic.

Just yesterday, Michigan-based JBS Plainwell recalled more than 43,000 pounds of ground beef after consumers discovered "green hard plastic".

And last week, Tyson Foods recalled more than 20,000 pounds of frozen beef patties after two customers found pieces of "soft purple plastic".
