In the episode of last week, Grantchester, the viewers have had clues that the new priest Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) could have secrets in his past. Faced with a crime involving child abuse, Will's angry reaction suggested that the case was reminiscent of painful personal memories. This week, we learn more about Will's own troubled childhood and his relationship with his family.
Will Davenport returns home
At the beginning of the episode, the situation is tense in the presbytery. Leonard (Al Weaver), upset by his fractured relationship with Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones), expresses frustration with his colleague, who he says has an "apathetic approach". Will, for his part, takes his wrath on a punching bag.
While advising a couple who will be getting married soon, Will gets a mysterious phone call from a woman who says, "He's done it again." We do not know exactly what's going on, but anything needs immediate attention . The curate calls Geordie (Robson Green), who agrees to accompany Will to his family to solve the problem. But the detective is surprised.
Geordie badumes that Will comes from modest means and is totally false. It's chic, and the house is a big estate. "You have a gong," Geordie said as he entered. "You are so rich." But Will does not seem comfortable going home and, when he sits with the detective, so sit down with his family and his couple and a couple of visitors, Meredith ( Rachel Pickup) and Eddie (Robert Portal), it's clear why.
Will's father, Thomas (Nathaniel Parker) defeated his servant Eli (Christopher Fairbank) after accusing him of stealing and pledging certain items from the family. (This is the man's wife who called Will to intervene.) His son came home to confront his father about the incident, but Thomas refuses to admit that wrongdoing has been committed. Instead, he just wants to reprimand Will for choosing a job that brings in 10 lean pounds a week.
Will's father might make fun of his son's little income, but a visit to the family home after dinner reveals that the son might be better off than the father. The Davenports are broken and their house collapses around them. His parents are desperately trying to keep their appearance, even though they barely afford to pay the servants.
A mysterious death
Although the problem with Eli is not solved, Geordie decides to go home and let Will settle the damage himself. But then Meredith appears on the landing, covered with blood. She woke up to find Eddie dead in bed next to her. Will will immediately take Meredith as the murderer; Geordie is not so sure. Thomas is a violent man, so maybe he's the culprit.
Soon, Will discovers the truth about Eli's "crimes". He took jewelery and money to be pledged, but only because Will's mother asked him to do it because she needed the money. Will confronts his father, who calls him "a constant disappointment". Then he realizes that his father knew Eddie and convinced his friend to invest in a non-existent racehorse. When Eddie discovers the deception, it leads to a confrontation and a fatal head trauma.
Will tells his father that he has discovered what happened and Thomas seems resigned to surrender. He just needs a little time to make himself presentable, he says. Unfortunately, Will can not see what is obvious to viewers before it's too late. He hears a shot, then rushes out to find out that his father is killed. Now, Will has to deal with his father's suicide and the fact that he was a murderer.
All this is dark, and the things that happen to the other characters in the subplots of this episode are not much more cheerful. Geordie suspects Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) of misleading him with his colleague. But when he confronts her, she collapses and reveals that Anthony (Christian McKay) has attacked her. Geordie's reaction is predictable and at the end of the episode, he is about to go out with his wife's badailant, though Cathy does not beg him too, saying, "This is my fight."
Meanwhile, after being abandoned by Mrs. C and Will, Leonard is left alone to cook at the presbytery. Although the former housekeeper shows up and seems to want to make amends (after Will's encouragement), Leonard rejects the olive branch. He also calls the archdeacon who gives Will an interview about maintaining order in the parish. After he left, Leonard told the priest (who did not mention his father's suicide) that he was "a constant disappointment". These are the exact words that Thomas had used to describe his son earlier in the episode, and Will reacts impulsively, hitting Leonard in the face. Leonard rushes to the floor while Will, shocked, is moved realizing that he may be more like his father than he wants to admit.
The episode of next week Grantchester is the last season. According to his description, "Will will struggle to make a life-changing decision," whether it's staying in Grantchester or going home to help his mother manage the family's estate.
