Win with 29 balls in reserve places KKR ahead of Mumbai Indians

Calcutta Horsemen 159 for 3 (Tripathi 74 *, Iyer 53, Bumrah 3-42) beat Bombay Indians 155 for 6 (from Kock 55, Rohit 33, Ferguson 2-27) by seven wickets

Glittering half centuries of Rahul Tripathi and Venkatesh Iyer gave the Kolkata Knight Riders a seven-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi. As a result, the Knight Riders moved up to fourth place on the points table, with eight points in nine games.

Pursuing 155, the Knight Riders attacked from the start. Shubman Gill fell early but Iyer and Tripathi added 88 on 52 balls for the second wicket. Iyer hit 53 of 30 balls and the undefeated Tripathi 74 of 42 balls as the Knight Riders chased the target in 15.1 overs.

Earlier, a returning Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock gathered 78 in 9.2 overs for the first wicket. At this point Mumbai looked on the right track for a total of around 180. However, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and, towards the end, Lockie Ferguson stepped back to limit them to a below par total.

Rohit, de Kock lay the groundwork

In the Knight Riders’ last game against the Mumbai Indians, Eoin Morgan deployed a rotation for the first five overs. On Thursday the spinners threw the first four overs and managed to control the scoring rate despite Rohit finding the limit every now and then.

At the other end, de Kock was on 6 on eight balls against spin. But once the seamers were in place, it came loose. On six balls he hit three sixes on Ferguson and Prasidh Krishna to take Mumbai to 56 for no losses at the end of the power play. Andre Russell was not spared either, with Kock welcoming him in the back-to-back all fours attack.

Knight Riders bowlers strike back

Narine provided the Knight Riders with a breakthrough when Rohit mis-timed a slog sweep and was caught off guard. This triggered a lull. Mumbai only managed 29 races over 10-15 as Prasidh took over the wickets from Suryakumar Yadav and Kock. The latter reached his half-century with 37 balls before mis-timing a slower ball at a short midwicket.

It was now up to Kieron Pollard to help Mumbai finish solidly. In the 18th, he crushed Prasidh on the deep midwicket for a six before pocketing a thin-leg four streak for the next ball. He went to 21 on 13 balls but was running out of time. Ferguson went on to win an excellent final, conceding just six points. Eventually, Pollard was kicked out of the second ball from the 20th. During the third, Krunal Pandya lay down as the sleeves ran out.

Iyer, Tripathi break the back of the hunt

Knight Riders forerunners Gill and Iyer gave the team a quick start for the second time in two games. Gill started it off by throwing Trent Boult on the deep midwicket before Iyer pulled him on the deep square leg for the second six of the over. In the next round, Iyer hit Adam Milne for a six and two fours. By the time, Jasprit Bumrah beat Gill with an offcutter, Knight Riders had run to 40 in three overs.

Arrived at number 3, Tripathi continued in the same vein. He cut Boult to the third man’s right, paddled Milne on a short fine and at the end of the power play the scoreboard was 63-1. Even after the field restrictions were lifted, Iyer and Tripathi n have not stopped fetching their shots. . Iyer was the first to raise his fifty, with just 25 balls. Tripathi hit the benchmark soon after, on 29 balls, with a top-to-bottom six from Bumrah.

Tripathi, Morgan apply the finishes

It was Bumrah who struck again for Mumbai, hanging up Iyer’s leg stump with a slower bullet, but it was too late for a miracle. With the Knight Riders needing 28 of 48 balls, Tripathi hit Chahar for a six and four, while Morgan finished with six more. Morgan became Bumrah’s third wicket before Nitish Rana swept Rohit upside down to side with crossing the line.
