About one in 28 children lived in a household where both parents are in distress.

The data was collected from an Understanding Society survey of about 40,000 households in the UK between 2016 and 2017.

According to the survey, children are more likely to live with a parent with emotional problems if both parents are unemployed.

"The emotional distress of parents can lead to mental health problems, including anxiety or depression," says PHE about the research.

"It is badociated with an increased risk of subsequent behavioral and emotional difficulties in children."

Dr. Bernadka Dubicka, faculty chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists for Children and Adolescents, explains that the impact of parents' mental health on their children can not be underestimated.

"Adult mental distress is clearly on the rise," said Dr. Dubicka.

"All adults in emotional distress will not have a mental health problem, but many will be.

"If we can treat their illness early, it could have significant positive effects on the well-being of their children."

Dr. Dubicka added that employers need to be more aware of workers with mental health issues in order to provide them with adequate support.
