PORTLAND, Maine – Recovery coaches help break the cycle of opioid addiction

A new program connecting trained community members and people with substance use disorders gives them a chance to break the cycle.

Bonnie Guerrette completed the 40-hour training in December and is now a certified recovery coach.

The program sponsored by the Rotary District 7780 District Rehabilitation Leadership Committee provides coaches with the tools and information needed to help people with substance use disorders. Coaches learn to save lives, first aid to Narcan's administration. Guerrette who is recovering from her addiction to heroin – daily guides people through the streets of Portland. She says providing a supportive support system helps people at risk stay clean after their rehabilitation ends.

"They trust me, it's really great to see people change," Guerrette said. "A friend of mine just went to a recovery center in Old Orchard Beach, which is great because he's been on the street forever."

Recovery coaches must commit to volunteering 20 hours a week.
