Reducing Note Costs at Ghana Law School – Parliament at the General Legal Council

Parliament has asked the General Legal Council to reduce current remarks fees from 3,000 FCFA to 500 FCFA for law school students in Ghana.

The Council was also invited to reopen the comment period for failed students from the Ghana Law School who could not register.

Law students presented a petition to Parliament describing what many described as the school's worst examination performance.

Only 64 of the 525 students who pbaded the exam pbaded, while 284 of them failed and 177 were dismissed.

After reviewing the report of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, members also asked the General Legal Council to hold additional examinations for all returned candidates.

Parliament hopes that the additional examinations will take place in time for the successful candidates to be registered this year.

Council should also consider adopting off-site tagging retreats to allow rapid re-tagging of scripts, but also to make marking schemes and examiner reports available to Ghana School students and faculty of Law.

The Speaker of Parliament requested that the report be forwarded to the Council and other stakeholders of the School of Law "for appropriate action to be taken".

In the meantime, some members want more concrete action from the House.

Binduri MP Robert Kuga-nab Lem said some of the alleged discrepancies in the marked documents were unacceptable.

"There is no reason why anyone can fail with a paper with 23% and the remarkable results see it go by with 76% … We should not mbadage and pamper people in authority and power who are completely irresponsible. "

While students have been pleased with the work of Parliament to date, Nana Fredua Agyeman, Chair of the Student Representative Council, said, "Most of our concerns have been addressed."

He expressed the hope that stakeholders would come together "to bring a lasting solution so that the review of Act 32 reflects what we are looking for as a student and what will contribute to the free of education in Ghana ".
