The Trade Union Congress (TUC) demanded immediate reimbursement of any wages that may have been paid to the spouses of the president and vice-president.

The country’s largest workers’ union has categorically rejected the recommendations of the Ntiamoa-Baidu committee that spouses receive wages.

Union Secretary General Dr Yaw Baah said there was no legal basis for such payments.

He stressed that even though the committee recommended the payments, “it is just not fair for anyone who has not been formally assigned functions and responsibilities in the public service to receive a monthly salary.

“The Committee probably sought to regularize the payment of compensation that had already been paid. But you cannot regularize the payment of allowances which have no legal basis, ”the statement said.

Noting that the matter is very passionate for citizens, Dr Baah advised President Akufo-Addo to suspend payment of salaries to the First Lady and the Vice President’s wife until they officially see each other. assign tasks and responsibilities.

“The president should also ensure that all such payments made to his wife and the vice president’s wife are repaid immediately.

“When the time is right for the wives of presidents and vice-presidents to be given official duties and responsibilities that will enable them to receive salaries from taxpayers’ money, the government executive should remember the wives. presidents of parliament (heads of the legislative body of government) and wives of chief justices (heads of the judicial body of government). They can also perform certain official functions, ”he said.
