Alex Neil, former Scottish Secretary for Health, said: "The NICE guidelines released today are extremely disappointing.

"It's a bad report and it certainly does not put patients at the center of thinking."

Scottish Conservative interim leader Jackson Carlaw said: "This is an amazing decision and a betrayal for the many women whose lives have been ruined by this procedure.

"The way NICE has managed to reach this verdict is a mystery and brave activists will naturally demand answers.

"In Scotland we have a moratorium on lattice implants, and I urge the Scottish government to keep it in place."
