Debian 10 Buster release
The Debian project plans to release the new version of its distribution on July 6th. Debian GNU / Linux 10 "Buster" updates the software configuration and introduces many new features.
Software of public interest
Debian Buster or Debian 10, in development for more than two years, has been declared stable by developers and published for all supported architectures. As with all stable versions, the new version brings many new features and improvements and also modifies various areas, some of which fundamentally.
The new version comes just 25 months after the last one and is supported by default on Linux 4.19, GNU Compiler Collection 7.4 and 8.3 and on systemd 241. The DNS server BIND 9.11, Emacs 26.1, GnuPG 2.2 and Vim 8.1 are also included. Go 1.11, OpenJDK 11, Perl 5.28, PHP 7.3, Python 3 3.7.2 and Ruby 2.5.1 are also available. For server problems, administrators include Apache 2.4.38, MariaDB 10.3, PostgreSQL 11, and Samba 4.9.
One of the most visible new features of Debian 10 Buster is the use of Gnome 3.30 by Wayland. The new server replaces the aging X.org server and offers several benefits. "Wayland has a simpler, more modern design that offers security benefits, among other things," says Debian. Users targeting one of the other environments, including Cinnamon 3.8, KDE Plasma 5.14, LXDE 0.99.2, LXQt 0.14, Mate 1.20, and Xfce 4.12, will still receive X.org as their default display server.
The AppArmor structure is now installed and enabled by default. The seccomp-BPF sandbox method is now used by APT to improve security, as well as support for UEFI Secure Boot. Thanks to the Reproductible Builds project, more than 91% of the source packages included in Debian 10 are reproducible. "This is an important verification feature that protects users against malicious attempts to manipulate compilers," the project says. Future versions of Debian will also include metadata so that end users can check the source of packages in the archive.
Network filtering is based on the default nftables framework. In addition, EFI support, introduced for the first time in Debian 7 "Wheezy", has been extended. Secure Boot support for amd64, i386, and arm64 architectures should work immediately on most computers that are enabled for Secure Boot. The cups and cups-filters packages are also installed by default in Debian 10. The other updated components of Debian GNU / Linux 10 "Buster" include Chromium 73.0, Firefox 60.7, GIMP 2.10.8, Inkscape 0.92.4, LibreOffice 6.1 and Thunderbird 60.7.2.
Debian 10 contains more than 59,000 software packages created from nearly 29,000 source packages. In total, ten architectures are supported: amd64, i386, ppc64el, s390x, armel, armhf, arm64, mips, mipsel and mips64el. The system is available in the form of various installation media. Users already using Debian 9 can update their system using APT. Thanks to the success of the LTS initiative, Debian 9 will be fully supported for three years, along with its three predecessors, and with restrictions for two more years.
