A major Japanese chip maker is preparing to cut jobs because of the contraction of the domestic market. NHK has learned that Renesas Electronics is in union negotiations about this plan.
The company has announced plans to cut 1,000 jobs by the end of June. This represents about five percent of its workforce.
If the union agrees, Renesas will launch a program to allow people to voluntarily leave the company. It will be offered to employees aged 35 and over working mainly in the technical and administrative sectors.
Leaders say that major customers such as automakers have shifted their operations out of Japan, which has reduced domestic activity.
This is the fourth time that Renesas has offered a voluntary departure program.
