HENDERSON, Nevada (FOX5) – A primary school student in Henderson has died of the flu, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office.
The coroner said that Anthony Springer of Henderson, 10, died on Thursday.
The Vanderburg Elementary School, Vanderburg Elementary School, sent Friday a letter to parents informing them of Springer's death: "We will always remember this student in our school's family .
In the letter, the school indicated that she was working with the students to make sure they had the support and resources to go through this difficult time. " Bereavement counselors were on campus to talk to grade five students on Friday. He asked parents to "watch for any sign of grief or change in behavior in your child (ren), as this loss could affect them unexpectedly". He also reminded parents to maintain open communication with their children.
Director Catherine Maggiore sent an email Friday at 11am to the staff to inform them of Springer's death. He asked the staff not to share information about Springer's death with the students of that time. He told the staff that "the news" would be in school on Friday afternoon. "Basically, you have no comment to make on this child.If they ask questions about the flu in the building, you [sic] that the school was cleansed from top to bottom last night, "said the principal by email.
The coroner said he had not investigated Springer's death but had received his information and the cause of his death from a hospital in the area.
According to the Southern Nevada Health District, 13 people died during the influenza season in Clark County until February 2nd.
