The Mercy Medical Center in Redding faces more than $ 40,000 in penalties after the Department of Public Health stated that a surgical sponge had been left in the abdomen of a patient, causing his death.

After the operation, the patient returned to the hospital because her heart had stopped. An x-ray revealed a sponge in the abdomen.
An autopsy revealed that the patient had died from inflammation of the abdomen tissue usually caused by bacteria.
Public Heath conducted a series of interviews and finally decided to fined Mercy $ 47,500.
It's the second time that Mercy Medical Center receives a penalty like this.
