In the wake of Apple's recent announcement that three million iPads were sold in the first 80 days, a survey of developer interest shows that the tablet is the second most popular device behind iPhone. The study, conducted by the manufacturer of a development tool, revealed that 84% of developers surveyed said that the iPad holds their interest, a jump of 26 points from April.

The developers have expressed disinterest for other smartphone platforms, calling Appcelerator to comment: "Apple and Google are playing chess while everyone is catching up." Between March and June, RIM's BlackBerry had lost 9% of developer interest, with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. (announced in February) had 7% less interest for developers.

But the survey also offered warning information to Apple. Interest in the development of a tablet based on Google's Android operating system reached 62% in June, although there was no tablet yet. In addition, developers love the connection to the App Store, preferring the iPad or the iOS from 89% to the 10% of Android. However, developers prefer that Android has the most powerful operating system, the most open platform and uses an operating system offering the best long-term prospects.

This is not the first time that developers say they prefer the iPad. Earlier this year, at the height of speculation on the iPad before the launch, another poll found that the number of applications under development was multiplied by three, compared to January 2010.
