Data from the Arkansas Department of Health show that a growing number of state children are not immune to childhood illnesses.
The current law states that children must be vaccinated against diseases such as measles, mumps and polio at a certain age or before starting their studies. Parents may request exemptions from the Ministry of Health on medical, religious or philosophical grounds.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the data indicates that the number of exemptions in the state has jumped by about 25% in the last five years, from 6,397 to 8,016. exemptions. Department spokeswoman Meg Mirivel says the figures include Arkansas students in public and private schools.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that 555 measles cases had been confirmed in the United States this year.
