Research on vitamin D deficiencies can play a major role in understanding the different causes of disease. This research can lead to important treatments as well as effective therapies and preventive approaches, said Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

Sheikh Nahyan said that the prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency is an area of medical research that is particularly promising and likely to develop significantly in the future. .

"The twenty-first century has been proclaimed the century of biological sciences. Guided by innovative research from around the world, there is no doubt that we are at the center of a new era of exciting discoveries, "he said.

"Research on this topic is essential and has great potential to advance medical knowledge and practice around the world," he added. Sheikh Nahyan noted that vitamin D is not only an essential vitamin, but also an essential hormone for growth and survival of humans. However, he was surprised to note that the Middle East is one of the regions in the world where vitamin D deficiency is widespread.

"Since most people badociate vitamin D with exposure to the sun, why would the sun in the Middle East have this problem? I realize that in the modern world, most of us spend too little time outdoors, in direct sunlight. And unfortunately, this is a growing problem in our youth, where vitamin D deficiency can cause a multitude of recurring health problems, including bone and tooth development, autoimmune processes, disposition, obesity and disease resistance "he said.

He said that the field is growing very fast. The new discoveries about vitamin D deficiency are really exciting; these discoveries will strengthen our ability to address many of the world's major health problems.

He emphasized that new and ongoing developments in medical research must be transformed into practical treatments and preventive strategies.

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Conference Chair and General Manager of VPS Healthcare, Abu Dhabi, said some of the findings from recent research have made this year's conference more relevant.

"Some innovative research has brought even more knowledge and questions to our knowledge and understanding of vitamin D. We know that people with low levels of vitamin D may suffer from some health problems, but the question is to know if you treat vitamin D deficiency, can you prevent these problems? The jury is still absent for many questions, "he said.

Dr. Shamsheer, citing the results of "Vitamin D and Omega Trials (VITAL)," the longest and longest-term randomized study on Vitamin D, stated that VITAL showed no benefit in Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in the prevention of major cardiovascular diseases or cancer.

"In the badysis of VITAL by vitamin D, no difference was observed between a large number of secondary endpoints, strokes, cardiovascular death, or any deaths." either the cause, as well as a wide range of cancers and cancer deaths. And that's why we need more research, "he said.

Dr. Fatime Al Anouti, Chair of the Scientific Committee of the conference, said the lack of awareness of the impact of vitamin D deficiency had resulted in a high prevalence of this silent disease. She said that a person with vitamin D deficiency may not be aware of it because the symptoms – such as fatigue, dizziness, hair loss, l? inability to concentrate – may at first confuse with the symptoms of other diseases.

"After a while, it will affect health in general. Studies have shown a close relationship with vitamin D and diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, osteoporosis. It is therefore important to focus on the symptoms from an early age, "she said.

She emphasized that it was not enough to complete the treatment when you discover that you are suffering from vitamin D deficiency.
