Researchers Identify Effective Molecule in Destroying Tuberculosis – The Daily Siasat

Pretoria: According to a new study on mice, researchers have found an effective molecule against tuberculosis.

In the study, the group describes how it works when tested in vitro and in a mouse model.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). This airborne pathogen tends to infect the lungs and is pbaded from person to person.

In the 1950s, researchers developed drugs to treat the disease. Since then, however, the bacterium has become resistant and almost one third of new cases are caused by antimicrobial resistant strains.

In this new effort, published in the journal Science, researchers at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, discovered that the introduction of the 8918 molecule into a Petri dish caused the death of the 8918 molecule.

In addition, they also found that the administration of the mouse molecule to mouse models killed some of the bacteria that they carried without damaging them.

However, before 8918 can be considered a candidate for clinical trials, researchers must overcome an obstacle: its half-life is short, resulting in rapid metabolism of the microsome, indicating that there is not enough left long to kill many mountains before the body rolls away, the study noted.
