Rejection of Dr. Frimpong Duku

Referring to the dismissal of Mr Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, he noted that the disciplinary proceedings against him began on 23 July 2018 and ended on 28 August 2018 with the Disciplinary Commission's letter to the Acting Vice-Chancellor (V-C).

He indicated that Dr. Duku had received the letter inviting him to meet an investigative body set up on July 20, 2018 to investigate his conduct. He did and made submissions, but he decided not to appear before the Disciplinary Board with a letter from his attorneys him to make no appearance.

Professor Abakah baderted that the disciplinary measures taken by Professor Avea Nsoh were similar to those applied to Dr. Duku, where a Disciplinary Board, composed of prominent members of the Board and other personalities, had been formed to follow up to the charges against him. .

He pointed out that the jury had found that Professor Nsoh, director of the language college of Ajumako, had organized a seminar on campus in front of the district court of Winneba, without the agreement of the management, had made vicious insinuations Management, as well as usually absent from his duty and repeatedly showed no respect for authority in the university.

He added that Professor Nsoh, by his behavior and by several interactions in the media, had shown that he held in contempt the administration headed by the current VC, adding that "the disciplinary measures taken against him resulted from his irregular behavior. The dismissal of Dr. Osei Sarpong

With respect to Mr. Sarpong's dismissal, the Chairperson noted that Mr. Sarpong had also been treated according to the Rules of Procedure because he had appeared before the Board of Inquiry and the Disciplinary Board and had been tried fault.

Abakah stated that Dr. Sarpong and the Board of Governors separated from him at the meeting of February 22, 2018 without authorization, which was considered an act of insubordination, misconduct and misconduct. unacceptable.

Resignation of V-C

Regarding requests for resignation of the UTAG president for the VC, Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, Professor Abakah said that the power to revoke a VC was the only prerogative of the council, as provided for in the Article 12 (1). and 2) of Law 672 and did not intend to share it with another entity.

"The board decides that Professor Afful-Broni will remain the core V-C and that he will be helped to carry out his mandate until the end of his term in 2021," he said.

Way forward

Professor Abakah added that the demonstration resulted in the destruction of critical facilities that needed to be repaired before students could be asked to report to both campuses.

He stated that the "council is in the process of setting up an inquiry committee to unravel the circumstances and the reasons for the disturbances".

The university council would consider any requests it might receive from the staff concerned, which would be examined on a case-by-case basis, he added.

Reaction

When the Daily Graphic contacted Professor Nsoh about his reaction, he stated that the charges against him were false and targeted against him and other people with differing views on the conduct of the UEW.

According to him, he had been hunted because he had protested against the actions of the VC and the chairman of the board of directors, hence his attempt to drive him out to make sense of the culture of silence at the university.

Professor Nsoh stated that the speakers who had openly disagreed with the council had been targeted.

He therefore called on the Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to call the council to order, his actions being detrimental to the growth and development of UEW.

"What is happening at UEW is unacceptable and the government must take immediate steps to ensure peace and unity, as the academic community is highly polarized," he said.

He pointed out that, although the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, called on the current VC to promote reconciliation during his inauguration, he did the opposite by continually dismissing staff members who questioned his actions and those of the board.

"I wish to call the Minister of Education Mathew Opoku Prempeh, to ensure the dissolution of the Board of Governors for refusing to soften his position and to have him challenged the order to immediately reinstate all members of the dismissed staff, "he said.

He stated that he would continue to use the legal route to fight his dismissal by the Board of Governors.
