Officials from eastern Nebraska said that a child and a deputy of the Douglas County Sheriff had died as a result of the flu.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Dave Wintle, a 51-year-old MP, died Thursday morning in an Omaha hospital. According to officials, the 29-year-old department veteran had difficulty breathing on Thursday before being taken to the hospital.

In addition, the Douglas County Department of Health announced Thursday that he had confirmed the county's first pediatric death during this influenza season. The ministry did not specify when the child died or where he lived in the county.

The department says in its latest flu report that Douglas County has recorded 2,851 confirmed cases of influenza this season.
