Declan Rice, of West Ham, is excused for historical publications of the pro-Irish Republican Army (IRA) that he published on social media in 2015.
The rice played for Republic of Ireland at the youth level and made three high-level appearances before changing allegiance to England – his country of birth – earlier this year. The midfielder is online for his debut in England next weekbut in recent days his comments four years ago have resurfaced. In the posts, Rice wrote "up the RA", a phrase used to support the IRA, a paramilitary organization that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland.
Rice is now excused for her comments, accepting that they came from a place of naivety. On her official Instagram account, Rice wrote: "I am aware of the fact that a poorly worded comment that I had made when I was junior was broadcast on social media. I now acknowledge that my attempt to show my support to my teammates at the time could be interpreted negatively. Although my naïve words should not be a political opinion and do not represent who I am, I sincerely apologize for any offense committed. "
