"His football career, which has led him from Oldham to City, abroad to Italy and to Aston Villa, ends at age 31."

Richards, who grew up in Leeds, joined City from Oldham at the age of 14. After making his debut in the first team three years later, he played more than 175 appearances for the club.

He joined Aston Villa after a loan to Fiorentina in 2015, but due to an injury, he played only 26 games with the West Midlands club.

When Richards made his only appearance in England in November 2006 against the Netherlands, he became the youngest defender of the Three Lions, beating the record previously held by Rio Ferdinand.
