Right to Play Ghana has supported some schools in the country to adopt strict safety measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The international non-governmental organization has supported schools in its project communities with foot-operated hand wash basins, face masks, hand sanitizers and liquid soap.

Other items include exercise books, story books, COVID-19 posters, pens, pencils, manila cards, volleyballs, soccer balls, cones and ropes skipping, among others.

The items, valued at GHc 450,000.00, were donated to beneficiary schools in Savelugu, Tolon and Kumbungu in the North region and Ga South in the Greater Accra region.

Some schools in Keta in the Volta region have also benefited from this support.

In the Northern region, a total of 65 basic schools received amounts of COVID-19 protective equipment, sports equipment and educational materials to enhance effective teaching and learning during the period. the pandemic.

The donation of the items was part of the five-year Gender Awareness, Education and Transformation (GREAT) project implemented in the five districts by Right to Play Ghana with funding from Global Affairs Canada.

The GREAT project aims to promote quality educational outcomes for girls and boys at the primary level using the unique power of sport and play or learning through play pedagogies.

The project benefits 141 schools across the country.

Mr. Evans Akannue Atim, Team Leader of Right to Play Ghana in the Northern Region, who handed over the items to beneficiary schools at a ceremony in Tamale, said he was confident the items would be put to good use. for the ultimate benefit of children and teachers.

Mr Atim said: “We believe that with this support our schools will be well prepared to provide effective teaching and learning as schools reopen and, as a result, children’s academic performance will be improved.

Schools across the country reopened this week for kindergarten, elementary and junior high school children after nearly ten months of closure due to the rapid spread of COVID-19.

The government ordered schools to close on March 15, 2020.

Addressing the reopening of schools, Mr. Atim praised the government for the giant steps it has taken to ensure the safety of learners through exercises such as disinfecting schools, providing COVID-19 protective equipment and the mapping of schools according to certain health conditions. as part of disease control measures.

Dr Peter Attafuah, regional director of education for the North, accompanied by directors of education from the beneficiary districts, and the municipal director general of Savelugu, received the articles, saying they had come at the right time to strengthen the confidence of parents and children as the classroom activities began.

Dr Attafuah commended Right to Play Ghana for its continued support for quality education in the country.
