Rio Ferdinand blames VAR after Danny Rose's fine decision in Spurs v Man City

Rio Ferdinand has been outspoken in his critics of the VAR in the Champions League this season.

And he slammed the system again after Manchester City was given a controversial penalty in their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Danny Rose was tried for handling the ball after a shot by Raheem Sterling hit his arm at close range.

Hugo Lloris saved the next shot by Sergio Aguero before Son Heung-min hit a late winner for the home team.

But Ferdinand criticized the decision makers and claimed that they "did not understand football" after the last controversial sanction imposed for handball after VAR interference.

"You need people in this box who played the game," he said on BT Sport.

"These people do not understand football.

"People who understand football should make these decisions.

"It's clear to me, it's not a penalty."

Ferdinand has been frustrated by several handball decisions in the Champions League this season, along with many supporters.

City was controversially penalized against Schalke in the first leg of their first leg of the last 16 games, while Manchester United had the opportunity to win the win over Paris Saint-Germain after being sanctioned for the handball.

The last decision against Rose came after City players did not initially use a penalty through replays. They were quickly checked before the referee went to the monitor at the edge of the field to make his decision.

Aguero's fault after Lloris' excellent economy proved to be costly, as Pep Guardiola's team sank in front of a tight defeat against the Spurs.
