Rio Ferdinand has called on Ed Woodward and senior Manchester United officials to recruit only a certain type of player this summer, while asking them to stay with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager.

The legend of the Red Devils, who has won six Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League during a glorious period at Old Trafford.

However, since his departure, things have deteriorated at the club.

Three leaders – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho – have come and gone since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ferdinand thinks that United has gone too far from its roots.

While Solskjaer's return to the club has regained that essence of the past, Ferdinand believes that the club's hierarchy must shoulder its responsibilities to restore Manchester United to its former glory.

The first step is to appoint Solskjaer full time, but then Ferdinand wants the players to be cut in a cloth to be added to the team this summer.

"We tried different managers, different philosophies and finally, we went back to what worked in the past and what will work in the future," Ferdinand told the Irish Independent.

"I only hope that the club's owners realize that the way they ran the club and the changes in direction they've made at a fast pace does not fit the way United works. You need team leaders who understand this club and that's what we have now.

Manchester United is not like all other clubs and people who do not understand that it will fail when they go there. The pictures are on the walls to remind you of United's story and in recent years, the club has moved away from what makes it so special.

"Every player who goes through the door to United must have a given DNA and the club has signed too many signatures in recent years without these qualities.

"It's not just talent, it's more than that. Are you good enough to be a United player, do you want him enough, do you understand what it means to wear the jersey and represent the club. & # 39;
