Former Mion constituency MP (MP) in the northern region, Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, said the recent increase in ritual killings in the country was concerning and threatened the security of the country.
In an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3 New Day, he said the recent killings would not only destroy national security, but would also have negative psychological effects on citizens.
Mr Aziz said that “the urge of young people to get rich overnight has contributed to the increase in ritual killings due to the demand, generally, for body parts from fetishists.
“The National Builders Corps (NABCO) initiative is temporary and would not reduce the unemployment problem in the country.”
The former lawmaker recommended that the government strive to create sustainable jobs for citizens, especially young people, to prevent them from engaging in illegal acts.
He further said that the government should also create the right conditions for private sector companies to thrive in order to employ more people.
He said the Minister of Information should work for the adoption of a broadcasting law to regulate the content posted by news houses on their platforms.
National Communications Directorate, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), John Ayisi, who was also a panelist on the same program, said the government recognizes the need to create sustainable jobs to completely eradicate unemployment.
He explained that the NABCO program was a stopgap measure for unemployment in the country. This, he said, was commendable.
“The National Directorate of Communications has said that the issue of creating permanent jobs is a process and the government is working on it to achieve the desired goals and objectives.”
Mr. Ayisi added that the CID’s investigations into recent ritual killings should be meticulous to effectively manage resources and take responsibility for crime prevention.
