The mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, said that the number of road accidents and deaths at the Lapaz intersection on the N1 highway in Accra had significantly decreased thanks to road safety improvement work carried out on this section.

According to him, records from the Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicate that road accidents at the Lapaz intersection have increased from 16 percent to 5 percent.

Mr Sowah revealed it when he addressed the media after the inauguration of the road safety improvement works at the intersection of Lapaz on Friday.

The work, which was carried out with the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies' Health Cities Partnership (PHC), is part of the efforts of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). aimed at improving the safety of pedestrians in the city and reducing the number of road accidents and deaths at the intersection to a bare minimum.

The work includes increasing pedestrian signaling time from 18 to 42 seconds, lowering sidewalks at pedestrian crosswalks, reducing track width, widening the median shelter, replacing signals and slides damage and the re-marking of pedestrian crossings and other markings. .

"We widened the medians to accommodate more pedestrians before crossing the 14 lanes. Traffic lights for pedestrians, which were 18 seconds earlier, were increased to 42 seconds. The curbs have also been lowered to allow wheelchair users and other mobility-impaired people to easily cross this intersection, "he said.

Mr. Sowah said that the large volumes of pedestrians registered at the intersection and the need to protect the road users have informed the development work.
