Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta
Minister of Roads and Highways Kwasi Amoako Atta has ordered the removal of Ghana Highways Authority toll manager Emmanuel Spencer Baah because of his apparent disregard for the road toll directive for people with disabilities.
Mr. Amoako Atta said that there was "a clear sabotage of government policy."
According to the directive, at least 50% of people with disabilities must manage the toll stations in the country.
The 50% quota reservation represents a total of 200 slots on the country's 35 toll stations.
The initiative aimed to empower persons with disabilities in accordance with the manifesto of the government of the new patriotic party.
According to the minister, only 100 disabled people had been employed at the present time, which shows a flagrant disregard for government policy.
"Instead of 50% of the place reserved for disabled people, only 100 [had been engaged]. And even for this 100, I've had a number of complaints … "
"… The head of the toll stations must be removed and rebadigned immediately. I will set up a committee next week to conduct an investigation into how the recruitment exercise was conducted, "he added.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities stresses the need to protect the rights of children and adults with disabilities and to ensure their full and equal participation in society.
According to the UNICEF report on Ghana, about five million people with disabilities are in Ghana.
