If we believe the rumors, Roberto Martinez should land the leading position in Barcelona this summer.
Ernesto Valverde's mandate seems increasingly untenable and Barcelona is looking to take a new direction – with Martinez claiming to be ahead.
If Martinez does land the job then he will have a lot of work to do to ensure that Barcelona back to the heights of European football. Fortunately, he has a host of former players who would fit in perfectly at Nou Camp next season.
Here is a look (not quite serious) on what Barcelona might have under Martinez next season.
Joel Robles (GK)
So good Martinez has signed him twice for Wigan and Everton, Joel Robles is the obvious candidate to line up between the sticks for Barcelona next season.
Okay, so it's proven that it's actually not * that * good, but have you seen the size of the child? He is almost twice as tall as Marc-André ter Stegen and for that reason alone he should take the number one jersey away from the German with relative ease.
Oh, and he's 28, which, as everyone knows, means that he's about to enter peak of her career, MOREhe has only played five league games in 2018/19, which means he'll be as fresh as ever.
Emmerson Boyce (RB)
Barcelona's problems on the European stage all started when they got rid of Dani Alves. The obvious solution? Get Emmerson Boyce out of retirement … of course.
Boyce may have had the turning circle of a cargo ship and just about as much agility as Emile Heskey in roller skates, but he knew how to tackle a tackle.
That's exactly what Barcelona needs right now. Someone who will not bother to venture out and play at the back. Someone who will just put seven bells at the door of all the people that he sees. A profitable choice, no foolish choice that should even be in the running for the captain's armband.
Antolin Alcaraz (BC)
The set of signature players from your old club's trope was a little bit excessive when Martinez snapped up Antolin Alcaraz from Wigan.
This looks like the pro-evo version of the California jail, Alcaraz was pretty tidy for Wigan, appalling for Everton and now he's apparently playing for the mighty Olimpia in his native Paraguay.
Transfermarkt worth him at the modest sum of £ 180,000, so Martinez could probably pay for himself at age 36 when he was so inclined.
Dedryck Boyata (BC)
Gerard Piqué is fine, but is he really anything compared to the World Cup semi-finalist Dedryck Boyata? I do not think so.
Boyata may have already agreed to join Hertha Berlin for free this summer, but that should not stop Martinez, especially since Boyata has already proven that he was ready to throw his toys into the pram for his Ensure a move – even if he did not do it. I do not really manage to do it last summer.
Martinez made the seemingly strange decision to take Boyata to the World Cup last summer and he actually played all three matches of the group stage of Belgium ahead of Vincent Kompany. Its quality is undeniable.
Jean Beauséjour (LB)
A tough fight between Jean Beauséjour and Roger Espinoza, but the first should signal to represent Barcelona given that it comes from Chile, which is better in football than Honduras of Espinoza.
To be fair, Espinoza is not even a left-back, but he played there in the final of the FA Cup 2013, so Martinez can still consider it as a potential option. However, if he was a sensitive man, he would go all out to lug Beausejour away from the darkness of life with
James McCarthy (CM)
James McCarthy deserves a break. After all, he has been able to make only one appearance since January 2018 after fracturing his tibia against West Brom.
The Irish midfielder made the same number of appearances for Wigan and Everton – 133 – so it seems normal for Martinez to complete the trilogy by offering him 133 appearances for the Blaugrana on the way to unprecedented European domination.
He will only have one year left on his current contract so that it will be a very affordable option if Martinez seeks to strengthen his midfield options.
Ben Watson (CM)
Maybe Ben Watson would be better off the bench to win the Champions League final next season, but it would be difficult for Martinez to deny him a start when you consider their story together.
Watson is a great player – just ask him what is his ultimate FA Cup goal – who is able to reverse a match with a single moment of magic – just ask him what his winning goal is in the FA Cup .
Did I mention that he had scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final?
Jordi Gomez (AM)
We are talking now. A creative midfielder with an eye for a pbad that grew up in the Barcelona Academy (before playing for Swansea, Wigan, Sunderland and Blackburn)? Register it as soon as this second.
Gomez was the most talented individual of the FA Cup winning team in Wigan and he has now disappeared in the darkness of the Cypriot league. Philippe Coutinho has hardly obtained anything since joining the club. Gomez therefore has nothing to do.
Lionel Messi (RW)
Martinez is not so stupid. Callum Mcmanaman is good, but he's not this well.
Lionel Messi should stay a few more years.
Adnan Januzai (LW)
When Adnan Januzaj was named to the World Cup team of Belgium, the world laughed. No one was laughing when the former Manchester United champion threw a sensational effort into the top of the table against England in a group stage game totally meaningless, though, no?
Martinez clearly sees in Januzaj something that no one else sees, which is why he is still called to represent Belgium while he is doing practically nothing for Real Sociedad.
Get rid of Ousmane Dembele and have Januzaj, Roberto come. You know you want it.
Arouna Koné (ST)
The last player to have played under Martinez in Wigan and Everton, Arouna Kone is the only player able to lead the line for Barcelona next season.
What should be a surprise to anyone, Kone is currently working in Turkey and almost aspires to return to the big leagues after having looted 11 goals in 27 appearances in 2018/20.
Barcelona signed Kevin Price Boateng in January, so they invariably get an upgrade if they decide to bring Kone to Camp Nou.
