Roma will take a goal in their Champions League second leg against Porto after a close win at Stadio Olimpico.
Nicolo Zaniolo scored a quick attack in the second half to give the Italians the advantage, but Adrian Lopez failed to return to a decisive goal on the outside.
Parity between the two sides was evident from the start of a hotly contested game, where both sides were content to sit and wait for opportunities to counter-attack.
VAR was called in action when the ball hit Pepe's hand on the edge of the area under pressure from Nicolo Zaniolo. The referees of the video judged that the handball was accidental or outside the zone, their examination having not stopped the game.
Dzeko was the closest out of the stalemate in the opening match 45 by hanging on to a superb Federico Fazio long ball, before cutting his defender and shooting a shot at carrying that Iker Casillas missed on goal.
Roma created several more chances in the second half (despite less possession of the ball) thanks to the powerful training of Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini, before Zaniolo emerged from the stalemate.
Dzeko recovered a center from Stephan El Shaarawy in the penalty box before putting it in the place of the 19-year-old, who hit the bottom of the far post of Iker Casillas with confidence.
Zaniolo doubled his score six minutes later, with the help of Dzeko once again. The small distance traveled by Bosnia by 20 meters touched the inside of the pole and rebounded directly on the path of the teenager. He cooly struck in an empty goal while Casillas could not recover from the initial shot.
Moments later, Porto scored a valuable away goal when Andre Pereira 's misplaced shot fell on substitute Adrian Lopez. The Spaniard brilliantly defeated goalkeeper Antonio Mirante, who was playing his third game of the season.
The second well-contested round will be played at Estádio do Dragão on Wednesday 6 March.
