Wayne Rooney said he had been advising Marcus Rashford just weeks before the Manchester United striker scored six goals in nine games for the Red Devils.
The two men spoke in preparation for England's 3-0 win over the United States in November, marking the end of Rooney's international career. Rashford then scored only two goals in 2018-19.
Since then, the 21-year-old has worn his season at eight, in all competitions, and Rooney has enlightened the conversation about his game.
"When I came back to play in the national team against the United States, I talked to Marcus and he was doing too much," Rooney told ESPN.
"He was trying too hard, he was working too hard, he was tired at the end of games."

"But the scary thing with Marcus, when he runs against you with the ball, he's impossible to defend and I reminded him to keep going down that path, just to get the ball and run against the defenders."
Rooney, who scored 253 goals in all competitions for United and become the club's top scorer, urged his former club to be patient with midfielder Paul Pogba.
The French international split the opinion during his second stint at Old Trafford and reportedly got into trouble with Jose Mourinho before his dismissal in December, but Rooney said Pogba would flourish if he was subject to less scrutiny.
"If you do not have a good relationship with the coach, it's hard to be at your peak if you feel like the coach is looking at every decision you make, every pbad you make," he said. Rooney, who left Old Trafford to join Everton in July 2017.
"Paul Pogba will give the ball, he will try pbades [and] it may not be the right pbad, but you have to let it go because two or three of those pbades will create goals, create opportunities.
"I think that he found it difficult under Mourinho, I think that a player and a manager with big egos clashed and that the result would never be great."
