Former British Airways chief Keith Williams has been named chairman of Royal Mail, the group said Friday.

Williams, currently Vice President of the UK Postal Group and Chairman of its Audit and Risk Committee, will succeed Les Owen effective May 22.

Mr. Owen has been in the position for only six months. He succeeded Peter Long last September after criticizing the fact that Mr. Long's position was not consistent with his other commitments.

Mr. Williams spent 18 years at British Airways, including five as CFO, three as General Manager and two as Executive Chairman of the airline.

He will step down as Aviva's non-executive director in May.
