Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996, after the Queen had ordered them to finally end their four-year separation. Although Diana left with a staggering divorce settlement, she lost the use of the title Her Royal Highness in what was widely perceived as a snub of the royal family. The royal author Penny Junor, in her biography of 2017 entitled "The Duchess: The Untold Story," talks about the decision made and Prince William's reaction to the news.
Ms. Junor writes:[Charles and Diana] retained equal access to William and Harry and equal responsibility for their education.
"The only contentious issue was how she should call.
"She was stripped of the title of Her Royal Highness."
She keeps: "[Diana] asked Prince William if he did not want her to lose her queen status.
According to Ms. Junor, 14-year-old Prince William said, "I do not care about your name – you're mom."
Ms. Junor also said that the decision "was not what the prince wanted, but it was not in his gift; it was a decision for the queen.
She concludes, "It made little practical difference, but it was a blunder in terms of public relations."
The royal experts do not agree on the title of SAR and whether the queen was willing to let Diana retain the honorary title.
Paul Burrell, in his 2001 book "A Royal Duty," writes that the Queen was pleased that Diana retains the title of HRH, but that the Prince of Wales was "categorical" in abandoning him.
However, author Tina Brown, in her 2007 book "The Chronicles of Diana," states: "The Queen would never let Diana retain the title".
She adds, "It was for the same reason that the Queen Mother had insisted on Wallis Simpson.
"Who knew where Diana's private life could lead her in her second act and what kind of unforeseen difficulties could be caused by a terrible second husband?"
Mr. Burrell also tells how William promised his mother to return her honorary title.
According to the former royal butler, Prince William said: "Do not worry Mom, I will return you one day when I will be king."
Diana retained the use of the Princess of Wales and, under the terms of divorce, she was allowed to use the title of princess unless she remarried.
Sarah Ferguson, who had her own royal divorce that year, was also stripped of her HRH title and became known as Sarah, the Duchess of York.
