BERLIN, March 27 (Reuters) – German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz has said he wants to extend tax incentives for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids for a new decade.
Germany is trying to boost sales of electric cars in response to the diesel emissions fraud scandal that has hit the auto industry over the last three years.
Scholz told the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that German carmakers had invested billions of euros in electric mobility.
"We have to accompany this with an expansion of the charging infrastructure and fiscal measures," he told the newspaper in the article published on Wednesday.
"I think it's important, in terms of industrial policy, to expand our support program for electric battery vehicles and plug-in hybrids, which are currently limited to 2021 for the whole of the next decade, "he said. Government subsidy programs helped boost sales, but even so, electric cars accounted for only about 1 percent of new car registrations last year, the KBA said.
Volkswagen said earlier this month that it would be pushing aggressively to build electric cars and that it would require it to cut jobs. (Report by Madeline Chambers edited by Andrew Heavens)
