The co-main event featured heavyweight contender and Southern California fan favorite, Andy "The Destroyer," Ruiz Jr. (32-1, 21 KO's) scoring a TKO victory over Alexander Dimitrenko (41-5, 26 KO's) after five rounds in their heavyweight showdown.
Ruiz showed the exceptional speed of the hand that defined his career, dropping difficult combinations on the head and body of the great Dimitrenko. Ruiz was harbading Dimitrenko, controlling the center of the ring and selecting his points to unload.
"He started to slow down and I could see the face that he did when I hit him with bullets to the body," Ruiz said. "I just stayed disciplined and focused, I could not get too anxious, I just wanted to break it until the tree fell."
Dimitrenko tried to use his jab to hold Ruiz at bay and managed to make a pbad under Ruiz's right eye during the first few rounds. It was not enough to prevent Ruiz from approaching and in the fifth round he began to pile up his punishment, punctuated by tight straight hooks that lifted Dimitrenko's head.
"We worked to slip his right hand and come back with mine," Ruiz said. "I missed a few, but I stayed busy – I focused only on doing the job."
After the fifth round, and on Dimitrenko's corner board, referee Ray Corona ended the fight before the start of the sixth inning. Ruiz was comfortably ahead of the three dashboards and was aiming for another heavyweight contender for his next possible opponent.
"For my next fight, there is someone like me, an exciting and chubby fighter I want," Ruiz said. "Adam Kownacki, I'm ready, let's do this."
