The communications control body of Russia has threatened Thursday to block access to VPN services, which allow users to access websites that have been banned by Moscow.
Russia has adopted stricter laws on the Internet, forcing search engines to remove certain results, email services to share encryption keys with security services and social networks to store users' personal data on servers from the country.
But VPN (Virtual Private Network) services can allow users to establish secure Internet connections and reach banned or blocked websites.
Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor said it asked the owners of 10 VPN services to join a national computer system containing a registry of banned websites.
If the VPN services are system-related, their users will not be able to access the blocked websites or use the forbidden Telegram email service.
The Internet censor said it sent notifications to NordVPN, Hide My Ass !, Hola VPN, OpenVPN, VyprVPN, ExpressVPN, TorGuard, IPVanish, Kaspersky Secure Connection and VPN Unlimited, giving them a month to respond.
"In cases of non-compliance with the obligations provided by law, Roskomnadzor may decide to restrict access to a VPN service," said the watchdog in a statement.
