Rwanda has banned public and private transport between districts and the capital, Kigali, after the rate of coronavirus infections reached alarming levels, health officials said.
Domestic and international tourists can still travel across the country, but must be provided with proof of negative Covid-19 test results, the prime minister’s office said in a statement.
December was the deadliest month, with half of the 105 deaths reported so far since the first case was confirmed in March last year
Officials believe backcountry travel during the holiday season is the source of the new wave of infections.
The country has recorded 820 new cases and 30 deaths in the past seven days.
Tharcisse Mpunga, who is in charge of primary health care, told the national broadcaster that “at this level the country should go into lockdown.”
“To contain the virus, we had to halt travel within the country for at least 14 days,” Dr Mpunga said.
New restrictions were announced Monday evening that will see business premises close at 6:00 p.m. local time and banned gatherings and social events.
A national curfew that runs from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. local time is still in effect.
