Rwanda has reopened its common border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after the detection of the Ebola virus in the Rwandan city of Gisenyi.

The border was reportedly closed Thursday for several hours after the confirmation of a third Ebola death in the Congolese town of Goma, on the border with Rwanda. However, the Rwandan authorities confirmed that the border was open after a slowdown in traffic caused by the new filtering measures implemented to reduce the risk of the spread of Ebola in the country.

Opening of the border between Rwanda and the DRC

Rwanda currently does not have the Ebola virus and the World Health Organization has recommended that borders remain open between the DRC and its neighbors. However, the first confirmed cases of Ebola deaths in the densely populated city of Goma, where more than 2 million people live, have raised fears that the virus will spread to Rwanda.

Goma is a major transit city connected to the Rwandan city of Gisenyi, which has more than 85,000 inhabitants.

After confirming the presence of the Ebola virus in Goma, Rwanda has introduced stricter border measures to reduce the risk of spread of the disease in the country. The border will remain open, but stricter controls have been put in place and the authorities have urged the population to avoid unnecessary pbadage.
