A Rwandan suspected of involvement in the 1994 genocide in the African country was found guilty of immigration fraud and perjury after seeking asylum in the United States.
A federal jury in Boston found Jean Leonard Teganya guilty of deliberating less than three hours on Friday.
American lawyer Andrew Lelling said that US asylum laws are meant to protect "real victims of violent crime" and that Teganya has been "fleeing the truth" for 25 years.
Prosecutors said Teganya left Rwanda in July 1994 and was later expelled from Canada for his role in the genocide. He escaped to the United States and was found in Houlton, Maine, where prosecutors say he has not revealed the extent of his involvement in the genocide.
Teganya will be sentenced on July 1st. His supporters have not commented.
