Images of Rwandan newlyweds and family guests forced to spend their wedding night in stadiums for breaking coronavirus rules have drawn criticism.
Spending the evening in a stadium “My wedding day is a bad memory that will never fade in my life,” an anonymous bride told the BBC.
“Inflicting pain and shaming people like that doesn’t make us fear the crown or observe measures.”
Police in the capital, Kigali, had arrested at least three marriages over the Easter weekend because they exceeded the maximum of 20 participants.
A police spokesperson told Rwandan media that “more and more people celebrating were violating the measures,” and the police would not allow this to continue.
Some online said the police “are now going too far” in illegally detaining people overnight in stadiums, while others praised the police for taking steps to “keep them safe”.
Clarisse Karasira, a Rwandan music star, tweeted “this act lacks humanity”, and said it was “an eternal pain for the couple and their children”.
Rwanda’s response to Covid-19 has been hailed internationally, but activists and the opposition have lamented deep human rights violations in the process.
The country has recorded more than 22,000 cases of Covid-19 and 311 deaths.
