Ryan saves the day as Australia wins Asian Cup shootout

Australia had the best of a goalless draw 120 minutes before Ryan from Brighton stopped their shootout against Islom Tukhtakhujaev and Marat Bikmaev in a 4-2 shootout.

Mathew Leckie of Hertha Berlin, after a hamstring injury, buried the decisive blow to put the Socceroos in a clash against the UAE or Kyrgyzstan.

Uzbekistan dominated the first half against a pedestrian Australia that only managed to get a goal shot before the break, a benign effort by Aziz Behich.

Central defender Trent Sainsbury, back from suspension, is going to have nightmares about how he was dismissed by Eldor Shomurodov for an individual chance saved by Ryan's arm.

Javokhir Sidikov hit home after Jaloliddin Masharipov easily avoided the common challenge of Rhyan Grant and Awer Mabil.

But Australia seemed determined to mix everything up after the break and when they finally clicked, Jamie Maclaren had a shot blocked before Grant had two chances with his head.

Leckie then made her long-awaited first appearance of the tournament and had an immediate impact on the sideline.

Leckie was part of a move that left Maclaren just inches from the opening of the match. After dribbling into the surface, he was only refused by a smart stop from Ignatiy Nesterov.

Rogic's powerful shot was shot through the post by Nesterov and, after an extension of overtime, the influential Celtic grazed another, just above the upright.

However, neither team could win the winner. In the end, Ryan made all the difference by standing right at Tukhtakhujaev's kick in the center and diving down for Bikmaev.

Rogic however received a yellow card in the first period, which will have removed him from the quarter-final.
