Sacha Baron Cohen wins Golden Globes for third film for ‘Borat’ sequel – Deadline

A little after Borat Subsquent MoviefilmWinning the Golden Globes tonight in the Best Film – Musical or Comedy category, Sacha Baron Cohen has returned to the limelight to claim the Actor in a Film – Musical or Comedy award.

“Wait, Donald Trump disputes the result,” Baron Cohen joked. “He claims a lot of the dead voted which is very rude to say about the HFPA.”

While saluting all the artists who risked their lives to participate in the making of this film – which shot in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic – the Borat The writer, producer and star of the sequel especially thanked someone he kept anonymous. “A big thank you to my bodyguard, who kept me from being shot twice,” he said. “You know who you are and you know that I am not allowed to say your name. But thanks.”

In his first acceptance speech of the evening, for Best Picture, Baron Cohen also went in both topical and hilarious directions. “Thanks to the all-white Hollywood foreign press,” he said unmoved, to get things started.

“I have to say that this movie wouldn’t have been possible without my co-star, a new talent who came out of nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius. I’m talking, of course, of Rudy Giuliani. I mean, who could make you laugh the most in one decompression? He added, before thanking his current co-star, Maria Bakalova.

In the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Baron Cohen defeated James Corden (Prom), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Andy Samberg (Palm springs) and Dev Patel (David Copperfield’s personal story).

Also nominated for a WGA Award, as one of the writers on Borat, Baron Cohen has been nominated for the Globes five times in total. While he factored in running last year with the Netflix thriller The spy, his only victory in the past had come for the original Borat, in which he first introduced the world to his now iconic comic character. It was this victory that set the stage for his first and only Oscar nomination, as a writer for Borat.

Directed by Jason Woliner, its fictional sequel continues the story of a Kazakh journalist who captured the world’s attention in 2006, with a documentary he made about the United States. After humiliating his country with this film, Borat finds that he must return to America to redeem his reputation, offering his daughter as Vice President Mike Pence as his wife.
