Ghana's police have described unfair and unjustified criticism as an inability to quickly reveal where the CEO of the troubled gold company Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, was.
In an interview with Starr Today, the director general of the Ghana Police Public Affairs Unit, ACP Eklu, said the police "did not have a magic wand" for immediately knowing where to go found Mr. Appiah Mensah.
He added that the police would have no way to know the arrest of Mr. Appiah Mensah in Dubai if the authorities of that country had not brought his arrest to his attention.
According to him, the Ghanaian police have contacted the Dubai police authorities to ensure that Mr. Appiah Mensah is finally returned to Ghana as soon as possible.
Confirmation of Mr. Appiah Mensah's arrest comes hours after the Dubai Police Headquarters and the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, denied knowledge of this arrest.
Police say Menzgold's CEO was arrested on 7 December in the Gulf country to facilitate investigations into suspicions that he was involved in a gold trading transaction that went wrong in the UAE.
ACP Eklu added that his arrest was only brought to the attention of the Ghanaian authorities on Sunday, 13 January.
On Sunday, a property occupied by Mr. Appiah Mensah's father was raided by Ghanaian police officers.
