Saint Lucia monitors the increase in measles in Europe and the Caribbean

(CMC) – Saint Lucia announced that she was closely monitoring the increase in the number of measles cases in Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean.

Acting National Epidemiologist, Dr. Michelle Francois, said that although the island has been free from measles transmission since 1990, the Ministry of Health asks St. Lucians to remain vigilant considering travel links with affected countries during the tourist season.

She stated that it was necessary for those present to be aware of the symptoms of measles as it could pose a threat to public health.

"The virus is preventable by vaccination. This means that people vaccinated against measles will not get it if they are in contact with an infected person. The virus is transmitted by air droplets when the infected person coughs and speaks, so she must be on the lookout for certain signs and symptoms.

"Infected people usually have a fever with a cough. There are features of white spots in the mouth, redness of the eyes or conjunctivitis, as well as a rash that would appear later in the disease; it starts on the face and moves to the rest of the body, "she added.

The epidemiologist also stressed the need for the Department of Health and Wellness to intensify surveillance efforts to control the transmission of measles to St. Lucia.

"Since we have not seen measles cases since 1990, the Ministry of Health has taken initiatives and launched awareness and update courses for front-line workers, such as doctors, nurses and people in the ports, to help identify and manage measles, should a case arise, "she said.

"We will also work with our non-health partners, such as tourism, early childhood development centers and related health services, as we seek to combine our efforts to ensure the safety of the population."

The Department of Health and Wellness urges St. Lucians to be vaccinated.
