Speaking of the relevance of the show today In the light of the conversation about children's education about LGBTQ + relationships in school, Wainwright said she found it both "relevant" and "unfortunately relevant", particularly in light of the recent attack of a bad couple on a London bus.

"I hoped that it was relevant at this level, that we can now have a drama in which the lead role was a homobadual woman, the 9 o'clock public, a Sunday night drama in which the characters Main are two homobadual women.

"But by becoming aware of these stories in recent weeks, it is relevant and sadly relevant that Anne Lister got beaten up at the end of episode five and that still happens now."

The director also added that she would like to be able to write the show for the rest of her days, explaining that there is a lot of material in Anne's diaries to use in the future .

"Obviously, we have the second season, which is fantastic, and I hope it will continue after that," added Wainwright. "There is no end to stories, diaries, this huge wealth of knowledge."
