It has come to the attention of NDC leaders and members in Nadowli Kaleo constituency, an ill-fated post in traditional and social media attributed to our beloved party’s head of national communications, lawyer Sammy Gyamfi.
This publication calls into question the integrity of the Speaker of Parliament, our former Member of Parliament. We would like to take this opportunity to express our dissatisfaction and disgust with the conduct of the head of national communications of our beloved party.
As long as the Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin is not above criticism, however we are unable to accept the kind of comments from Sammy Gyamfi that describe Rt. Hon. Bagbin like a traitor.
As the national leader of a party with many supporters, Sammy could have resorted to using appropriate structures within the party to attempt to address his concerns, and not in the way that exposed the President to attacks from part of the Party’s supporters. His comment misled many supporters into believing that the President was among those who voted or that he has the power to defeat candidates who were expected to be defeated. The reality is that the President does not have an original or casting vote as stipulated in the Constitution and the Rules of Parliament.
To say the least, Sammy Gyamfi’s emotional outburst has brought the President’s name into disrepute.
During 28 years serving the people of Nadowli / Kaleo constituency and the NDC and Ghana in general, we have never been betrayed by our former MP and now Speaker of Parliament. During his long years of service in building the NDC and parliamentary democracies, he has done his part to the best of his ability. We have never, for once, heard that he had betrayed the very Party he represented as a deputy and if he had betrayed the NDC, we in this constituency would have cut short his stay in Parliament.
We remember his days as the leader of the minority in Parliament and the work he did to bring the Party back to power in 2009. Against all odds, oppressions and intimidation of the Kuffour administration, he carried this Party at a time when many of our compatriots had backed down for fear of unfavorable actions against them by the NPP under President Kuffour. He resisted bribes from elements of the Kuffour government to silence him. If he had accepted the bribes, he would not have been able to hold the Kuffur administration accountable to the people. His determination and zeal to bring the NDC back to power paid off when Professor Mills was elected president.
His contributions to rebuilding the Party when it nearly collapsed in 2001 are well documented so that we can all learn him as one of the greatest minority leaders Ghana has ever seen in our nation’s history. . He saw enough money and gifts to betray as a minority leader, but he never did. We therefore cannot accept Sammy’s assertion that Bagbin is a traitor, especially when he has shown throughout his service to this Party that he is a man of dignity, has never yielded to such acts and will never commit to it. To call such a worthy man who refused to betray the NDC for millions of cedis and dollars in multiple attempts by elements of the Kuffour administration is very unfortunate except to say that there is a predetermined agenda for giving a dog a bad reputation for being hanged. . We resist this as Party members in this constituency. No one loves the NDC more than Rt. Hon. Bagbin.
As a member of the Political Committee chaired by HEJohn Mahama, Sammy Gyamfi cannot ignore the work of Rt. Hon. Bagbin throughout the election period to get the Party elected. Even when the head of national communications presented the Moment of Truth series and the weekly press series, not a single one was left uncovered by Tumpani FM 88.5 in Nadowli to carry the message to the people and every two weeks, Bagbin paid at least Ghc5000 to cover the cost of airtime for these programs. This continued until the last press conference which was discussed after the December elections. This has contributed to a significant increase in votes in the NDC. Is our national communications manager saying that these communications activities under his auspices funded by Bagbin amounted to betrayal?
As officers and Party members, we should not be rushed by feelings or emotions in the face of problems. When the NDC won the NPP presidential election, we did not see any member of the NPP National Executive insulting or openly attacking its leaders in Parliament in the same way Sammy did. They did not expose their leadership to the public for public ridicule. Rather, they chose to question and investigate themselves to determine the cause of the defeat in the presidential election. Probably, if they had done it like Sammy did, most of their MPs would have felt offended and could have voted against people nominated as ministers.
Despite this, we are also disappointed that some of our MPs voted for the approval of some of these candidates when their “sins” against the NDC and Ghana in general were ruthless. Nonetheless, we cannot use the sins of the few MPs who, for whatever reason, have chosen to reject the Hon. Koomson and others to expose the entire caucus to public defamation and ridicule. We cannot understand why someone like Ursula Owusu should get a single vote from the NDC side when she openly insulted them for giving up their senses and helped shut down NDC affiliated media stations. Like our previous Parliament, we have the Hon. Anthony Sumah, a worthy replacement who sees betrayal as a sin against humanity and God. He will never betray the NDC, the party that gave him the opportunity to become an MP. If he is deemed capable of being involved in any act or form of NDC treason, this constituency will not forgive him but until then we are firmly behind him in his legislative activities.
In conclusion, we ask Sammy Gyamfi to apologize wholeheartedly to the Speaker of Parliament for discrediting his name.
We further call on all Party members in Nadowli Kaleo constituency to remain calm and continue their good work for the Party. We must all be encouraged to work harder than we did in 2020. We must add vigilance to our work in our quest for power. As HE John Mahama told us in his response to the Supreme Court’s Selective Judgment, we need to be more optimistic than ever.
We again call on the National Executive Council of the Party, as well as the Council of Elders and the Parliamentary Party Caucus, to take immediate action to investigate the circumstances which led to the overwhelming endorsement of the ministers whose actions cost the government. NDC, a resounding victory. in the 2020 polls.
This will enable the Party to prevent such unfortunate decisions in the future. We call on all members of the country to always restrict and support the leaders in their remaining parliamentary duties. We must continue to uphold the Party Constitution by responding to our grievances using the channels explicitly stated to do so.
